External training Programs

Dissemination of information is one of the activities of MPA aiming at promotion of skills building. Professional staff of MPA along with the Psychiatrists have provided training to set-up help lines and conduct stress management courses. Programmes conducted are:

  • Air Warriors of the IAF
  • NGO – Guwahati
  • NGO – Salem
  • NGO – Access

Air Warriors of the IAF

The first programme of training of skills required for setting up a helpline in the North East was held  at MPA from September 1 to 6, 2008. This was in response to a request from the HQ Eastern Air Command, IAF, Shillong. The sessions on stress management and suicide prevention were conducted by Dr. G. Gururaj, Dr. Ajit Bhide, Dr. B.R. Madhuker, Mrs. Akhila Blaise, Ms. Mary Paul, Mr. Sidney Blaise, Mr. Abdul Bari, Ms. Anita Gracias and Mrs. Lata Jacob.

Dr. J.W. Sabhaney presided over the programme, which was inaugurated by Air Commodore A.K. Behl, Principal Medical Officer, IAF Shillong. At the valedictory function, the Chief Guest was Air Vice Marshal R.K. Ganjoo, Commandant, CHAF, Bangalore.

The second programme from April, 13 to 18, 2009, helped to train personnel from the IAF to set up another emotional support helpline. The programme, held at CHAF, Bangalore, was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Air Cmdre. H.S. Nanda and the valedictory function was graced by Air Commodore K.K. Tripathy. The workbook compiled by Mrs. Jacob was highly appreciated.

The third programme, a six-day workshop on training for the emotional support helpline ( e-support helpline) was held  in 2010, as part of the IAF stress management programme at the Command Hospital Air Force, Bangalore. Twenty Air Warriors referred by HQ TC IAF were provided skills enhancing experiences and information .

The fourth workshop for the Air Warriors on emotional support helpline was inaugurated by Air Vice Marshal Dr Anil Behl, AVSM at the Command Hospital Air Force, Bangalore on 24th January 2011. Air Warriors from Shillong and Allahabad were provided with theoretical and practical experiences.

The fifth programme was held from 22nd to 27th August 2011 at the Command Hospital Air Force, Bangalore for 15 Air Warriors. This programme was also attended by the Nursing staff of the CHAF Hospital. 

The opportunity to be part of skills building has been appreciated by both the participants and the trainers. MPA staff joined in the coordination of the various activities associated with the training. MPA issued certificates to participants who successfully completed the training. The feedback that was received tells us that our work is highly valued! 

Training for Helpline – Guwahati

In response to a request for training of staff of Ashadeep, an NGO at Guwahati (Assam), for the process of starting a Telephonic Counseling service for persons in ‘emotional distress’, Mrs Lata Jacob and Mr. Christopher Daniel conducted the training from 7th to 9th December 2011 . The training was well received and the process for providing the service has been initiated. Ashadeep, the NGO at Guwahati, (Assam) launched their Telephone Counseling Helpline called ‘Paritranam’ on 11th Jan 2012.

Awareness program for educationists – Salem, Ladies Circle

World Suicide Prevention Day 2011Passion for life” an awareness program on suicide prevention was organized on 11th September 2011 at Salem, by Smt. Padmini Balaji, President of the Ladies’ Circle of Salem. The program was facilitated by Dr. Sabhaney, Mr. Abdul Bari, Ms. Chatura, Mr. Kumaran and Mrs. Lata Jacob.

Awareness program for students – Salem

Stress and Coping strategies, a bilingual awareness program in Tamil and English, for 200 students of the 8th to 10th std. classes of the Anderson School in Salem was held by Mr.Abdul Bari and Mr. Kumaran Subramaniyam. The programme aimed to build positive methods of addressing stress.

Awareness program for Parents of students at ACCESS,

ACCESS, an NGO helping Children attend school held a Parents meeting on 14th September 2013 at their center at New Chellekere Extension, Kalyan Nagar. Mr. Abdul Bari and Mr. Kumaran S. were resource persons for the session on ‘Stress Management’ in Tamil language.
